Passenger accident information

Injured as a passenger in a road accident?

Practical preparation for passengers: what is useful to record, what you will and will not be asked, and how a legal provider could consider an injury enquiry when discussing it with a qualified provider.

Start with your journey

Useful details depend on how you were travelling

Private car

Note who was driving, the vehicle registration and any insurer or incident reference you know.

Taxi or private hire

Keep the booking receipt, app journey record, vehicle registration and operator details.

Bus or coach

Record the service number, operator, direction of travel, stop or route, and ticket details.

Work vehicle

Keep the employer or fleet details and any report or reference created after the accident.

Bus and coach journeys have extra route, ticket, operator report and onboard camera details. Read the separate bus and coach passenger page.

Your account

Describe what you remember, without guessing

As a passenger you were not driving, but you may be asked what you saw: where the vehicles were, how they moved and what happened next. Record what you remember and keep estimates separate from facts.

You do not need to decide who was responsible. The legal provider and insurers would assess liability using the available accounts and evidence. If you do not know, saying so is accurate.

Keep what you have

Passenger preparation checklist

  • Date, rough time and exact location
  • Vehicle registrations and driver details
  • Booking, ticket, route or incident reference
  • Police or ambulance attendance and any reference
  • Your own factual notes about what you saw
  • Photographs or witness details, if safely available

Put safety and medical help first. Take photographs only if it is safe and does not delay assistance.

A referral, on your terms

You stay in control of your details

  1. 01

    Call accident support

Discuss the accident and the type of help you need.

  2. 02

    Know the recipient

Before agreeing to a referral, know who would receive your details and why.

  3. 03

    Choose your next step

You decide whether to proceed. A provider explains its own service and terms.

Smart Family Ltd’s role

Smart Family Ltd’s role is seeking out, identifying and referring claims or potential claims. A provider’s identity and the reason for sharing must be clear before you agree. We do not assess liability, decide eligibility, give legal advice or value claims.

Independent official information

Routes you can check directly

Some passengers and drivers in England and Wales may be able to use Official Injury Claim, subject to its eligibility rules. GOV.UK also explains accident reporting duties; those duties apply to drivers, not passengers. Use the official links below to check the current information.

Passenger questions

Can I make an enquiry if the driver of my car was a friend or relative?

You can discuss the circumstances with a qualified legal provider, including who was driving. The provider decides whether it can help; this site does not decide eligibility.

Do I have to know who was at fault?

No. Record what you remember and say where you are unsure. Liability is assessed by the provider and insurers, not by you or this site.

Will you ask about my injuries?

There is no online enquiry form available. A legal provider you choose will explain what information it needs. Do not send medical records through this website.

I was in a taxi or on a bus. Is that different?

The core approach is the same: write down what happened without guessing. Bus and coach journeys now have their own guide because route, ticket, operator report and onboard camera details can be more specific.
