Safety first
Put safety and assistance before evidence
Move away from traffic if you can do so safely. Take photographs or gather details only when it is safe and doing so will not delay assistance.
What to keep
Build a clear factual record
Incident details
Note the date, time, exact location, direction of travel and the vehicle registration or description.
Witnesses and cameras
Keep witness details and note nearby dashcams, helmet cameras or CCTV. Footage retention varies, so asking promptly may help.
Bicycle and equipment
Record damage to the bicycle, helmet, lights and clothing. Take photographs only when it is safe and does not delay assistance.

One incident, different losses
Injury and equipment damage can be considered together
Injury and damage to your bicycle or equipment are different types of loss from the same incident. A qualified provider can consider them together and explain how each is handled.
This independent referral service does not repair, replace or value bicycles, and it does not arrange hire equipment.
Unknown or uninsured driver
Check the Motor Insurers’ Bureau route
The Motor Insurers’ Bureau has official routes for incidents involving uninsured or untraced drivers, subject to its criteria. Check its current information directly. Official Injury Claim is not the route for cyclists.
A referral, on your terms
You decide before anything is shared
01
Call accident support
Discuss the accident and the type of help you need.
02
Know the recipient
Before agreeing to a referral, know who would receive your details and why.
03
Choose your next step
You decide whether to proceed. A provider explains its own service and terms.
Smart Family Ltd’s role
Smart Family Ltd is preparing this as a referral service. It would take a short enquiry, name one legal provider and ask your permission before sharing anything. That provider would decide whether it can help and explain its service and terms. Smart Family Ltd does not assess liability or give legal advice.
Cyclist questions
Does it matter that I was not wearing a helmet?
There is no legal requirement to wear a helmet in the UK. Whether it affects anything is a legal question for a qualified person, not something this site decides.
The police took details. Do I still need my own notes?
Yes. A police incident number is useful, but it is not a copy of the evidence. Keep your own notes and any photographs taken safely.
Do you need my medical records?
There is no online enquiry form available. If you instruct a legal provider, it will tell you what information it needs.
The driver drove off. Is there anything to do?
There is an official route for untraced and uninsured drivers through the Motor Insurers' Bureau, subject to its criteria. Reporting the collision to the police and keeping any incident number is normally relevant to it.
